Syria confirms murder of top officer The Syrian government confirmed the assassination of a high-ranking officer in Tartous, the pan-Arab Al Hayat newspaper reported on August 6. Presidential advisor for political and information affairs Buthaina Shaaban said Brigadier General Mohammad Suleiman was killed on August 1. Shaaban’s statement is the first public reaction by Syrian authorities to the murder which took place in a luxury coastal resort near Tartous, a city 250km northwest of Damascus. “An investigation is under way to determine who committed this heinous crime,” Shaaban said. |
