Sponsoring Syria’s orphans

The children’s charity Rainbow launched an exhibition to promote it sponsorship programme of Syrian orphans at the opening of the 55th annual Damascus International Fair (DIF) on August 15.

Rainbow, which looks after 160 orphans at Damascus’ state-run orphanage Zaid bin Haretha, operated a stall at the DIF from August 15-22, selling boxes, candles, mosaics and drawings made by the children.

“We opened the exhibition, not just to promote our sponsor a child campaign, but also to raise awareness about orphans in Syria and to try and integrate our children into the community,” Rainbow public relations director Imad al-Jabri said. “During the exhibition, people were able to meet our children and volunteers. This helped them to understand what our charity is all about.”

Rainbow’s ‘sponsor a child’ programme was launched in 2003. By paying SYP 300 (USD 6.50) monthly, sponsors can visit Zaid bin Haretha’s orphans and take them out on trips, under the supervision of Rainbow staff.

Before the exhibition, Rainbow had around 100 sponsors. At the DIF, the charity recruited an extra 15 sponsors, as well as a number of volunteers.
