Syria appoints new ambassador to France

Syrian president Bashar al-Assad appointed Lamia Shakkour as Syrian ambassador to France on August 24.

The post has been vacant since the previous ambassador Siba Nasser retired 18 months ago.

The appointment came a day before French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner visited Damascus to hold talks with Assad.

Kouchner’s visit is the first by a member of the French government since former French president Jacques Chirac cut off ties in response to the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri in February 2005.
