Women’s rights NGO appeals to local media

The Association for Women’s Role Development (AWRD) called on local media to help end violence against women during a workshop held in Damascus on September 2.

Journalists from major public and private media organisations, as well as prominent screenwriters and TV directors, discussed how the country’s media can contribute to ending violence against women during the four-hour workshop.

Suggestions included the publication of a clear definition of domestic violence in national media, using TV series to raise awareness of domestic violence and airing short clips about the issue on radio, TV and the internet. AWRD is also developing a plan to strengthen cooperation between NGOs and media organisations.

A group of Syrian women’s rights activists established AWRD in 2004 to raise awareness of women’s rights, and to offer legal, medical, mental and social support to women and amend discriminatory laws. The organisation established Syria’s first shelter for abused women in 2008.

“We’ve created a shelter and worked hard to help abused women, but we can’t achieve change alone,” AWRD Head Rania al-Jabri said. “Women’s rights NGOs can’t put an end to violence against women without media support.”
