Traffic police get new uniform

Traffic police get new uniformTraffic policemen in Damascus shed their army-green uniform for new grey trousers and white shirts last month.

The Syria News website reported on September 6 that the change in outfit, due to be rolled out nationwide, is part of a strategy to improve the image of policemen, a plan that also includes training on how to better communicate with the public. The website’s report noted that many people welcomed the change in dress, saying it made the police look more approachable. Others, however, thought the uniform was impractical as the white shirts would quickly get dirty from pollution.

The make-over is not unprecedented in the country. School students wore dark green uniforms until they were changed several years ago to the current blue uniforms. Both initiatives are generally held to be aimed at demilitarising the public life of the country.
