Iraq puts more police on Syrian border

Iraq has stationed hundreds of extra police on its border with Syria to allegedly stop militants from crossing into the country, the BBC reported on September 4.

The deployment comes in the wake of deteriorating relations between Syria and Iraq following claims from Baghdad that Syria is harbouring two Iraqi Ba’ath Party members accused of masterminding a string of attacks on government offices which killed close to 100 people on August 19. The accusations saw both countries recall their ambassadors on August 25.

Syria has long been accused by the US of not sealing its border with Iraq and allowing insurgents to cross into the country to commit attacks. In recent months, however, the international community has praised the Syrian government for making extra efforts to secure the border.

Ongoing mediation, led by Turkey, is attempting to reconcile Damascus and Baghdad.
