Syria on UNESCO executive council
Syria was voted onto the executive council of UNESCO last month. The vote was held in Paris during the organisation’s 35th General Assembly held on October 14, with Syria gaining 151 out of 167 possible votes.
In a statement to Syria’s state-run news agency SANA, Syrian Education Minister Ali Saad said Syria’s membership of the council would allow it to play a greater role in planning and discussing educational, cultural and scientific policy on an international level.
The UNESCO Executive Council, composed of 58 members, manages the implementation of new programmes and budgets, sets the agenda for the General Assembly, proposes new members and introduces candidates for UNESCO’s director.
Other countries which gained membership include Vietnam. |
