Al-Mabara organisation to house impoverished one-parent families

The Al-Mabara Organisation for Social Development and Orphan Sponsorship launched a new project titled ‘Ewa’a’ (Giving Shelter) in Damascus on February 15.

The project will house and provide job training to impoverished one-parent families in a residential complex located in Khiyarat Dannun in rural Damascus.

Speaking at the NGO’s headquarters, Al-Mabara President Nada Diab Mouradi thanked project donors, adding she hoped other individuals and businesses would support the project, which is still in its initial stages, with donations.

Al-Mabara was given the land in Khiyarat Dannun to build an apartment block which will consist of 40 flats ranging in size from 45 to 60 square metres. The building is still being designed by an engineering firm which has donated its services for free.

Stressing that the project was not only residential, but also developmental, Mouradi said the organisation plans to incorporate development and vocational training centres into the residential site. Families will live in the apartments free of charge until their children have completed their formal education or are enrolled in a vocational training course and are skilled enough to find a job.

The project aims to enable beneficiaries to “improve their personal and family status by making them efficient citizens in society”, a press release from the NGO said.

Al-Mabara was established in 1945 in Damascus. It started by providing care and support to underprivileged children and orphans before expanding its projects to provide educational and vocational support to struggling one-parent families.
