The Guinness World Records has listed a mosaic made of oriental sweets in Syria as the world's largest such creation, the privately-owned website Shukumaku reported on July 15.
The platter, measuring 112 metres by 1.2 metres, was made up of 606,200 individual sweets. It depicted famous Syrian religious and historical sites including the Umayyad Mosque, the waterwheels of Hama and the Aleppo Citadel.
It was made by Al-Sultan Company for Sweets & Oriental Foods and presented to the public at last month's Damascus International Exhibition which ran from July 14 to 23.
Hashish confiscated from Tartous port
Tartous police seized 300kg of hashish from a ship anchored in the city's port, the privately-owned website Syria News reported on July 7.
The Al-Walid, a North Korean-flagged ship, first entered the Tartous port in January. Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the hashish and its intended buyer, an anonymous source told the website.
The ship's crew, including seven Indians and an Egyptian captain, have all been detained by the Department of Immigration and Passports.
Family members accused of honour killing detained
Four men are in prison on suspicion of carrying out an 'honour' killing of a 28-year-old woman in the village of Yabed, about 10km north of the Efreem suburb of Aleppo, the privately-owned website Syria News reported on July 20.
Police found the woman's body in an irrigation cannel. Investigations indicate that the woman's family organised her murder and her brother carried it out, an unnamed source within the police department told the website. The source also said the victim was allegedly raped on July 13 by two young men from her village. Both men are reported to be in custody.
After the rape, the young woman went to her uncle's house to ask for help. Instead, her father, uncle, cousin and brother allegedly decided to kill her. All four men are currently in police custody. |
