New departments established at seven public universities A presidential decree on July 8 established new departments at seven universities throughout Syria. The programmes will begin in September. Public universities in the cities of Dera'a, Quneitra, Idleb, Tartous, Palmyra and Damascus will host the programmes. They include a new faculty of law in Dera'a and a faculty of economics in Quneitra, both affiliated with the University of Damascus. Damascus University will open a new media programme. New veterinary and administrative-sciences programmes in Idleb will be affiliated with the University of Aleppo. A faculty of tourism in Tartous, affiliated with Tishreen University in Lattakia, and a faculty of science in Palmyra, affiliated with Al-Baath University in Homs, complete the roster of new programmes. The number of state-run faculties now totals 121, up from 51 in 2000. Each is affiliated with the country's five public universities in Syria's major cities, including Damascus and Aleppo universities, Tishreen University, Al-Baath University and Al-Furat University. However, many of the new faculties are located at satellite campuses based in small- and mid-size cities. The new programmes will allow more rural students to pursue a tertiary education while living in their hometowns, Minister of Higher Education Ghiath Barakat said. Around 600,000 students are enrolled in public universities, a figure which will increase this autumn. The presidential decree was issued less than a month after another one created a second faculty of economics at Al-Furat University in Hassakeh. |
