China and Syria deepen political and economic relations

On April 3, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad discussed bilateral relations with Li Changchun, a leading member the Communist Party of China, Syria’s official news agency SANA said.

During his four-day official visit, Changchun also met with leaders of the Syrian Baath Arab Socialist Party and government officials in an effort to deepen political ties between the two countries and expand economic cooperation.

Syria and China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, already enjoy good political relations. China is looking for new oil resources in the region and aims to play a larger political role in the Middle East. “The friendship between China and Syria has weathered the tests of ever-changing international situations,” Changchun said.
