Syria holds conference on Iraqi security The Syrian Government held a meeting on April 13 in Damascus with representatives from Iraq’s neighbouring countries to discuss plans for strengthening security along Iraq’s borders. Syrian Minister of the Interior Bassam Abdul Majid said that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways in which the Iraqi people can be further assisted in their efforts to restore security and stability in their country. The US accuses Syria of allowing foreign fighters to cross into Iraq and also claims that Iran is supplying the Shiite militias with weapons. Both Syria and Iran deny these accusations but Syria has asserted that it is impossible to seal its border with Iraq completely. “Syria has introduced new measures such as increasing the number of observation posts and patrols to block outlaws and contraband from entering Iraq,” Majid said. The first Iraq security conference was held in Egypt on May 3 2007. At this meeting Iraq’s neighbouring countries agreed they shared responsibility for the security of Iraq’s borders. |
