German funding for Iraqi school children

Germany has granted Syria SYP 244m (EUR 4m) to help construct schools to accommodate Iraqi students living in Syria as refugees, it was announced on February 22.

The funding is part of the Emergency School Building and Improvement Project which is working to accommodate some 6,000 Iraqi school students now living in Syria. Under the programme, some 30 schools will be rehabilitated and two new secondary schools able to accommodate approximately 14,000 children built.

The programme is administered via the German KfW Development Bank and implemented by the Syrian Ministry of Education. It is co-financed by UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Syrian Government.

The German KfW Development Bank, part of KfW Bank Group, finances reform programmes and infrastructure projects.
