Bunni commends release of Nour
Imprisoned Syrian human rights lawyer Anwar al-Bunni has commended Egypt’s decision to free Egyptian opposition leader Ayman Nour after three years in jail, the Italian press agency Adnkronos International reported on February 19.
Bunni, who is currently serving a five-year sentence in Damascus’ Adra prison, said in a phone interview that he hoped other countries would follow Cairo’s example. He also appealed to Syrian authorities to review their policies.
“I hope that this step sends a signal to every country and all governments that violate human rights and freedom of expression and opinion, above all Syria,” Bunni said. “I want them to rethink their own policies in this regard, adopt the necessary measures and put an end to these violations.”
Bunni was arrested in May 2006 and later imprisoned under charges of “disseminating false information likely to undermine the morale of the nation”, “slandering and insulting state institutions” and joining an illegal political group. |
