UN Hariri probe visits Damascus
A delegation from the UN International Independent Investigating Commission (IIIC) probing the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri visited Damascus on February 13, Lebanese media sources reported. The visit, dubbed an “investigative mission” by Lebanese media, came one day ahead of the fourth anniversary of Hariri’s murder. The former prime minister was killed along with 22 others in a massive car bomb explosion in Beirut on February 14, 2005. Lebanese critics accuse Damascus of the assassination, an allegation the Syrian government denies. IIIC spokesperson Radia Ashoury said the visit was related to “operational aspects” of the commission’s work, but refused to provide any other details. The IIIC was established in April 2005 by Security Council Resolution 1595. The commission’s mandate expired at the end of last month. The Special Tribunal for Lebanon into the assassination officially began its operations in The Hague on March 1. Lebanese media reported that some of the major witnesses in the case had already been transferred to The Hague where they remain “under the witness protection programme”. |
