Freeze on car rental agencies announced

The Ministry of Transport issued a directive on June 7 forbidding the registration of new vehicles for car rental agencies. No explanation was given for the announcement.

The decision comes at a time when tourism numbers are increasing, leading to greater demand for rental cars.

Rental agencies are still able to purchase new vehicles, but cannot register them as belonging to the agency. This puts them in a legal grey area when it comes to recouping the cost of traffic fines or expenses resulting from accidents. A rental agency can only hold the lessee responsible for traffic fines or recoup accident costs on their hire vehicles if the vehicles are registered as belonging to the agency.
