Syria gains IOSCO membership

The International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), a grouping of the world's securities market regulators, announced on June 10 that it had accepted Syria as a member.

The decision was announced during a meeting of the presidents' committee of the IOSCO. At the same meeting, the securities market regulators from Iceland, the Maldives and Saudi Arabia were also accepted as members.

"I am delighted to welcome these four jurisdictions as IOSCO's newest members," IOSCO Executive Committee Chairperson Jane Diplock said. "It is particularly pleasing for me to see jurisdictions from such different legal and regulatory traditions demonstrating their commitment to IOSCO's principles."

IOSCO is a leading international policy forum for securities regulators. The organisation's 114 members are responsible for regulating more than 95 percent of the world's securities markets.
