Pakistan’s President Zardari visits DamascusPakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari visited Damascus to hold talks with Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad on January 8 and 9.

The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in all fields, Syria’s state-run news agency SANA reported. Zardari also briefed Assad on Pakistani affairs, the government’s military campaign against the Taliban and attempts to establish security in the crisis-ridden country.

During the two-day visit, Zardari visited the Shrine of Saida Zeinab in southern Damascus and the Pakistan International School in Yafour, where he placed the cornerstone for a multi-purpose auditorium named after the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto who was killed in a suicide bombing in December 2007.

The last Pakistani president to visit Syria was Pervez Musharraf in 2007.
