Young policeman shot dead during raid
A policeman was killed during a raid on a house in Aysoon, a village located 10km west of Homs, Syria News reported on December 2.
Ibrahim Issa, 26, was killed after Hassan Ali Abbas, wanted for the murder of two people, opened fire on the 10-member police team as they approached the house to arrest him.
Issa was shot in the heart and died immediately.
After the gunfire exchange, Abbas used his brothers, their wives and children as a shield and threatened to kill them if the raid continued, Syria News quoted an anonymous police source as saying.
Abbas was arrested when police back-up arrived. There were no other casualties.
Fees for exemption from military service modified
The Syrian People’s Council approved a draft law on December 3 to modify the fee that Syrian expatriates need to pay to be exempt from military service, the Syrian website Nobles News reported.
Previously, Law No. 30 of 2007 required expatriates living in an Arab country to pay a fee of around SYP 136,000 (USD 3,000) in order to be exempt from military service. Expatriates living in other countries were required to pay up to SYP 680,250 (USD 15,000). The new law determines a single new rate of SYP 295,000 (USD 6,500) for all expatriates.
Man hanged in Suweida for murder
A man was hanged in Suweida’s civil prison on December 10 after he was found guilty of murdering his mother-in-law in 2003, Syria News reported.
Hussein Youssef al-Bassit raped and killed Samira Abdallah Nasr in front of his wife, Syria News said. As Abdallah Nasr tried to resist, the pair strangled her to death before burning her body and burying it in Thebeen, Suweida.
Five months later, Bassit’s wife confessed the crime to the police. She went to the police after Bassit attempted to attack their daughter.
She was sentenced to hard labour for life.
Four Syrians killed in car crash in Saudi Arabia
Four Syrians from Nebk, Damascus Countryside, were killed in a car accident in Saudi Arabia, Syria News reported on December 2.
A relative of the victims said that the incident occurred 150km away from Medina when the car crashed into a subway entrance and burst into flames.
The pregnant woman, her husband, brother and uncle had gone to Mecca to perform hajj. They were en route back to Syria when the accident happened. |
