Angelina Jolie to adopt Syrian baby

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie plans to adopt a baby from Syria, Western media outlets reported last month.

A UK Immigration and Naturalisation Service spokesperson confirmed that Jolie had filed adoption papers and that her name was the only one on the documents, according to a report published in the British newspaper the Daily Mail. The baby would be the seventh child for Jolie, who is in a relationship with actor Brad Pitt.

Despite the reports, local legal experts say that getting around Syria’s strict laws regarding foreign adoption would make such an arrangement impossible. Others speculated that Jolie would make a large payment to get past the law.

Jolie is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and has twice paid low-key visits to Syria to talk to Iraqi refugees. The initial arrangements for adoption are thought to have been made during her most recent visit in October.
