Third swine flu case confirmed

Syria’s Ministry of Health confirmed a third case of the swine influenza A-H1N1 virus in the country on July 12.

A Syrian man who lives in Kuwait is the third patient to fall victim to the A-H1N1 virus, a statement released by Health Minister Rida Adnan Said reported. The man entered Syria on July 7 and developed a fever and cough two days later. Said said the patient’s flu was “light” and he was receiving the “proper treatment”.

Syria confirmed its first case of swine flu on July 4. The virus was detected in a Syrian woman who flew to the country from Australia via Dubai at the end of June. The second patient, diagnosed with the virus on July 9, was a family member of the first. The health minister said both patients had recovered completely.

According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) latest statistics, more than 94,500 cases of the flu have been confirmed worldwide and the virus has caused more than 430 deaths. The WHO recently declared the virus the first pandemic in more than 40 years because of the way it has spread around the globe.
