Syria discusses nuclear issue with Iran President Bashar al-Assad discussed with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki the French viewpoint on the Iranian nuclear issue, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported on July 17. During the talks, Assad reconfirmed Syria’s position that diplomacy is the only way to settle the issue. Assad’s meeting with Iran follows his participation in a Paris-backed Mediterranean Union conference earlier in the month. During the conference, French President Nicolas Sarkozy asked Assad to use his country’s close ties with Iran to help resolve the nuclear crisis by persuading Tehran to cooperate with the international community. Following the meeting with Assad, Mottaki said Iran appreciated and welcomed any role played by Syria to help ease tensions between the West and Iran. |
