Young woman escapes honour killing

Several family members of a young woman who gave birth to a child out of wedlock at Aleppo University Hospital gathered outside the building demanding she be handed over to be killed, the private website Day Press reported on March 7.

The young woman had been taken to the hospital after suffering from colic and digestive problems.

“Medical tests showed that the woman was seven months pregnant when she arrived at the hospital,” an anonymous source at the hospital told Day Press. “To save her and the foetus, a Caesarean was conducted. The baby was put in an incubator and the mother has been sent to a safe place until the issue is resolved with the family.”

Aleppo University Hospital Director Mahmoud Tassabehji said the young woman’s family had signed a document stating that they will not harm or kill her if she is returned to them, Day Press reported on March 16. He added that the young woman had not yet returned to her family.

The father of the child has been arrested for committing adultery. Both families are reportedly attempting to persuade him to marry the young woman.
